Protection of Jeita Spring

Report of the project:

Geological mapping, supported by multispectral remote sensing methods was conducted within the bilateral technical cooperation between BGR and the Lebanese partner.

Jeita Spring represents the main source of drinking water supply for Lebanon´s capital Beirut.

The existing geological map, prepared in the early 1940s, was not accurate and detailed enough. A sound understanding of the geology and tectonic setup, however, is the basis for an understanding of flow in the groundwater system. The natural protection of the aquifers system highly depends on the lithology, level of fracturing, karstification and the formation of a karst network.

The detailed geological mapping conducted at the beginning of the BGR project was of utmost importance for all later groundwater investigations. The result is a new geological map of the surficial recharge area of Jeita Spring.
