Comprehensive information about the structures on and below the seabed requires a large number of investigations and measurement data. BGR's marine raw materials research cooperates with numerous institutions in Germany and abroad in order to pool specialist expertise and technical equipment for the complex measurement campaigns and research cruises required. It is also represented on specialist committees and a number of employees are involved in academic teaching.
At national level, the main cooperation partners are the major marine research institutes such as GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) and Marum, with whom major research projects are jointly applied for and carried out. BGR's marine raw materials research is also involved in the German Geophysical Society's Marine Geophysics working group. The BGR is a member of the German Marine Research Alliance (DAM) and the German Marine Research Consortium (KDM).
At an international level, there is currently cooperation with the International Seabed Authority (ISA), the state geological services of Denmark, Sweden and Norway, as well as technical participation in the EU GeoSeas project.
