In 2001 the abandoned gas exploration well Groß Schönebeck E3/90 was reopenend and deepened to 4300 m. Since then the well serves as geothermal research well of the GeoForschungsZentrum, Potsdam. Methods for the recovery of geothermal heat shall be developed in sandstones and volcanic rocks of the Rotliegend formation. The geological setting in Groß Schönebeck is typical for the Northern German Basin and the results obtained here are transferable to many other places within this Basin.

In 2002 two frac operations were performed in two different intervals of the well applying proppants and gel. One year later a massive waterfrac was conducted over the complete open hole section.

These stimulations led to a significant improvement of the productivity of the well. Now it is intended to use this well as the injection well in a geothermal dublet.

In 2006 the second well was successfully drilled down to 4300 m as a deviated well from the same platform. One year later 3 stimulation operations in two different formations (volcanics and sandstone) were performed with good success. Both concepts, already tested in the first well - waterfrac and proppant frac – were applied. At present, preparations are made for a circulation test between both wells to characterise the dublet under realistic conditions.

During the years 2000-2004 BGR was involved in this project with own workpackages. BGR further contributes to this project based on a cooperation between the projects Groß Schönebeck and GeneSys, in particular, in the fields of hydraulic testing and stimulation.
