Aim
The joint project “A Sensor based Landslide Early Warning System“ (SLEWS)” aims at a systemic development of a prototyping alarm- and early warning system for landslides. A wireless sensor network collect real-time data about deformation of the surface. By using open standards within a spatial data infrastructure measurement data is provided user-oriented and automated alerts are submitted. The service-oriented infrastructure enables the integration of measurements from other sensor networks such as rainfall data or seismic data.

- Department of Geodesy and Geoinformatics (University of Rostock)
- ScatterWeb GmbH (Berlin)
- Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR)
In the work package the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) is responsible for the preparation and analysis of the interface to decision-makers and to the end-users of the early warning system. The integration of the system into existing networks and the connection to other early warning systems as well as the integration of research results in national, possibly also in European and international programs is another essential part of the work of the BGR.
Technology and standards
For data acquisition are multi-hop and ad-hoc wireless sensor networks (WSN) in use. By this technique, data can be obtained in real time. Sensor nodes operate with neighboring nodes and the data is forwarded by radio to a gateway. Characteristic of the WSN is the self-organization of the system.
Data management and visualization took place by OGC compliant web services. In SLEWS Sensor Observation Service (SOS) and Sensor Alert Service (SAS) will be tested.
Schedule
The project was completed in June 2010 and had a duration of 3 years. It was funded by the BMBF / DFG program GEOTECHNOLOGIEN: early warning systems in earth management, grant number of alliance: 03G0663 03G0663
