The enormous mineral potential in the central Asian countries Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan is of great importance for the future economic development of the region. A responsible mineral resources management will ensure that using the resources potential can support a sustainable development of the countries, provides an opportunity for sustainable job creation as well as a source of income to reduce poverty.

The project “Mineral Resources for Development II – BGR Module Tajikistan” (PN 2015.2137.6) is one module in the regional technical cooperation programme „Mineral Resources for Development in Central Asia“, which is being implemented in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan since 2012, by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), the German Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations (OA), and the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR), on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The BGR module focuses on Tajikistan and continues directly the work of the previous project. The goal of this module is: The Main Department of Geology under the Government of Tajikistan (MDG) provides in a service-oriented manner the necessary information on the raw material potential of the country as a contribution for the sustainable economic development of the country.

Each investment into mining starts with the knowledge about an exploitable mineral deposit, thus the geological description and economic assessment of a potential mineralization provides the basis for any further activities. Therefore the Main Department of Geology (MDG) plays an important role in the mineral sector, since it is their duty to provide the relevant information.

The project thus supports MDG by enhancing the capacity of its experts especially in geological field assessment using modern methods and in mining economics. It will further focus on the preparation and presentation of relevant information on mineral deposits in Tajikistan for the national and international public.

Apart from good knowledge about geology and economics of mineral potentials, the responsible and safe implementation of the mineral exploitation as well as the consideration of potential environmental impacts will ensure a responsible and efficient development of the geological and mining sector of Tajikistan. Therefore, the project additionally works together with the „State Control over Works and Safety in Industry and Mining“ as second project partner and conducts some specific training measures.

Until the conclusion of the GIZ modules within the regional programme in 2018, the work was implemented in close cooperation with the GIZ and the Eastern Committee of the German Industry (OA). The experiences and results of the project contributed to the regional and national expert dialogues organized within the regional programme. Additionally the close cooperation with the projects by the British Geological Survey (BGS) and the Finish Geological Survey (GTK), also implemented at MDG, will continue.
