Mongolia – Capacity Development of the Mineral Resources Sector in Mongolia II
Country / Region: Mongolia / Central Asia
Focal Point: Mineral Resources, Mining
Begin of project: January 1, 2018
End of project: December 31, 2021
Status of project: July 27, 2021
Mongolia’s mining sector is an important basis for the economic and social development of the country. Although the regular massive fluctuations of the world market prices for mineral commodities mostly have a direct effect on Mongolian economic growth, in a positive as well as negative manner, in the long term the mining sector will continue to play an important role in the Mongolian national economy. To reach a sustainable development of the Mongolian mineral resources sector developing long term strategies based on realistic assumptions and analyses are necessary.
The project is implemented within the German development program on “Sustainable Management of Mineral Resources” and supports mainly the state mining authority of Mongolia (Mineral Resources and Petroleum Authority of Mongolia, MRPAM) and the Ministry of Mining and Heavy Industry (MMHI) to strengthen their personnel and institutional competences for the development and management of a transparent and responsible mining sector. Advisory to MRPAM will contribute to strengthen its competence and to provide information and data in a suitable manner for the potential users, in order to encourage national and international investment in the mineral resources sector and organize the state management of the sector in a more effective, transparent and sustainable way. The project “Capacity Development of the Mineral Resources Sector in Mongolia II” builds upon the experience of previous BGR projects with MRPAM and focuses more on the needs of potential users of the outputs.
The project works in three fields of activity:
(1) “Capacity Development” includes strengthening of both personnel and institutional competences within MRPAM and additional actors in the mining sector, like the MMHI, in particular in the area of resource economics.
(2) In “Elaboration of professional information and its enhanced user specific provision” the experts in MRPAM will be qualified to produce economic assessments of mineral resource potentials and deposits as well as further technical reports and studies and present them customized to different target groups.
(3) “Efficient and transparent data management” mainly the newly developed eReporting system and the existing digital mining cadaster (CMCS) will be further developed and updated.
Political partner for the project is the Mongolian Ministry for Mining and Heavy Industry (MMHI). Implementing partner is the Mongolian Agency for Mineral Resources and Petroleum (MRPAM).
Project duration is some 4 years (2018 – 2021).
