GeneSys Hannover

GeneSys Hannover projectGeneSys Hannover project

The feasibility of the extraction of deep geothermal energy from tight sediments is the purpose of the GeneSys Hannover project. The results of research and the newly developed concepts from GeneSys Horstberg will be implemented in GeneSys Hannover. The overall project goal is to supply the office and laboratory buildings of the GEOZENTRUM with geothermal heat. For this purpose, 2 MW of thermal energy are necessary. To meet this prerequisite a production rate of 25m3/h with a temperature of 130°C is required.
By realizing this, it is going to be shown that, independent form the location Hannover, single-well concepts are an alternative for geothermal heat supply of this size (e.g. office buildings).

To do so, a 3900 m deep well has been drilled on the premises of the GEOZENTRUM from summer 2009 until winter 2009. In the run-up, a seismic profile has been acquired in Misburg/Lahe in order to determine the geological situation and the drilling site.

The position of the drilling site next to a housing area was a special challenge. In order to keep the noise pollution as low as possible while drilling, only silent, capsuled and electrically driven engines have been used and a 10 meter high protection wall was installed according to an independent noise-pollution-study. Traffic due to transportation during the drilling phase was limited to working days if possible.

The overall project goal is to supply the GEOZENTRUM with geothermal heat. To heat all the office and laboratory buildings 2 MW of geothermal energy are necessary.

The drilling is going to be followed by reservoir development and stimulation starting with a big waterfrac in May 2011. Further tests will follow in the next years to get more information about the subsurface to get an idea how to use the well as a heating source.

The GeneSys project Hannover is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology.
